Tuesday Tips: Making Content More Shareable

Written by intern Ashley:

Mashable discusses the Top 10 Most Viral Videos of 2010. Within a week, these YouTube videos garnered millions of views. How did they do it? What do PR professionals need to know about how to gain more exposure with videos? Creative, witty, and bizarre: these are the qualities of the most popular viral videos, like Old Spice’s “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.”

Make it relevant. What are people talking about? Make your video a part of the conversation. Use Google Trends and Twitter trends (via sites like Trendsmap) as resources. By discussing hot topics, people will be more likely to watch your video – and most importantly: share it.

Keep it short. Everyone knows this, but it’s easy to get carried away. Think under a minute.

Tell a story. Remember, this is for the BAW (bored at work) crowd. Stunning visuals aren’t as important as a funny story.

Optimize. Be sure to optimize the title, the thumbnail, and use tagging strategically. Even the best content needs some help.

What are some of your favorite videos that were flown under the radar that you’d like to share?
